London Irish are favourites to sign troubled James O’Connor on a short-term contract as he attempts to prove he is no longer a liability after being axed by Australia.

After a series of discipline breaches, the 44-cap back had his contract torn up by the Australian Rugby Union this month, meaning he will miss the Wallabies’ autumn European tour which includes a Test with England at Twickenham.

Western Force have ended talks with the 23-year-old about his return to the Super Rugby franchise and the player has made it clear he is heading to England. It is understood that Irish head the list of possible destinations with Saracens another option for the wing.

Mark Sinderberry, the Force chief executive who used to hold the same role at Sarries, said in a statement: “Our discussions with James included on-and off-field programmes that we believed could assist him in becoming the player he aspires to be and to develop himself as a person.

“James has made the decision that is right for him at this point in his career.”
