London Welsh have lost around £4million over the last two seasons.

It is understood that Welsh lost £1.8m while gaining promotion to the Premiership and their debut season in the top flight has incurred losses of around £2.2m.

The club’s major financial supporter Kelvin Bryon will end his backing this summer, leaving Welsh with no option but to cut costs as they prepare for life in the Championship.

Relegation from the Premiership, which was confirmed on Sunday, is estimated to cost a club £2m in lost revenue, although the Welsh will bank a £1.4m parachute payment.

Chairman Bleddyn Phillips admits the club may not be able to afford the rental costs of the Kassam Stadium at Oxford when they drop a division. A return to Richmond-based Old Deer Park, which has a very limited capacity, seems the only alternative.
