Rhys Priestland’s ready to make amends

Wales fly-half Rhys Priestland today vowed to justify the confidence shown in him by leading his team-mates towards the brink of the Grand Slam tomorrow.

The Scarlets man admitted he was not at his best in the Triple Crown triumph over England at Twickenham two weeks ago.

Coach Warren Gatland and the other Wales staff spoke to Priestland in the dressing room after the game to ensure his disappointing performance would not affect him.

Priestland took a number of wrong options in Wales’s 19-12 win. To compound his problems, the 25-year-old was also yellow carded at a crucial stage of the match although England failed to capitalise on the extra-man advantage.

Having been selected, Priestland is determined to make the most of his second chance.

“I’m just really pleased the coaches have shown confidence in me again,” said Priestland. “I was disappointed after the England game. Things didn’t go my way but there’s nothing I can do about it and I’m not really going to dwell on it.

“I’m just lucky to be having another chance and hopefully I will make a better job of it.

“Straight after the England game the coaches could see I was a little bit disappointed and they came up to speak to me. They said, ‘Don’t worry about it provided you learn from it’.

“I’ve looked back at the game and there were a few things I wish I had done differently. Hopefully I’ve learnt a lot and the experience will make me a better player."
