Six Nations: Alex Dombrandt deadline set in bid to make England vs Ireland clash at Twickenham

Alex Dombrandt will be given until Thursday to prove his fitness ahead of the Six Nations game against Ireland at Twickenham on Saturday.

The Harlequins No8, who started the recent games against both Italy and Wales, is in danger of missing the match after testing positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

But England head coach Eddie Jones hopes the 24-year-old can produce the necessary negative tests and prove he is back to full health in time to be in the mix for selection.

Jones said: “He’ll have a chance. We’ll see on Thursday if he can train. If that’s the case, he’s in with a chance.”

England have Sam Underhill back in their squad ahead of the visit of Ireland after returning to action for Bath following time out with concussions and a hip injury.

Elsewhere in the back row, Tom Curry is working through return to play protocols after suffering a concussion in the win over Wales.

“He’s a quality player, he’s had a difficult season, with Covid, sickness and a few injuries,” Jones said of Underhill.

“He’s a little bit off his best but we’ll give him the opportunity to train tomorrow and see where he’s up to.

“And if he’s at the necessary level to play an international game against Ireland, then he’ll come into the consideration for the 23.”
