The potential candidates who could replace Stuart Lancaster as England head coach

Two World Cup winners and a couple of serial job hunters should head the list of potential replacements for England head coach Stuart Lancaster as the final days of his regime play out.

England’s failure to reach the knockout stages of their own World Cup has made rugby history for all the wrong reasons and left Lancaster with little alternative but to accept his three-and- half-years in charge have come to a natural and desperately disappointing conclusion.

While Lancaster can look forward to possibly filling a vacancy at the Rugby Football Union mentoring the next generation of players and coaches, his bosses have to identify the man they believe can mount a successful challenge at the 2019 World Cup in Japan, where many of the England team are expected to deliver the kind of performances their inexperience made difficult to produce in this tournament.
