Team Standard: Mix Up Your Routine

The team grappled with “hitting the wall” during their 12-week training programme

Team Standard are now getting to grips with their 12-week training plans as they prepare for the British 10k London Run on Sunday, 13 July.

This year, the run welcomes New Balance as its Official Sporting Goods provider. The brand remains committed to manufacturing in Britain, making this event the perfect partner for them. Team Standard were set the challenge this week of “hitting the wall” during their training runs. The team, who are of mixed ages and ability, are all discovering that training for a 10k race does not all have to be about running, as New Balance Technical Representative Bradley Howarth explained.

“Incorporating resistance and plyometric exercise into your running routine aids physiological development and breaks the monotony of a longer training run,” he said. “Hitting the wall simply means dropping down and doing press-ups or any other body weight exercise when you run past an obstacle. It could be tricep dips or you could try and jump on to the wall two-footed to increase strength and flexibility.

London Live’s Head of Programming Jonathan Boseley (pictured above) is a keen runner who loves to mix up his training with military fitness and cross-country races.

He has had to fit his training runs around the launch of London Live at the end of March, but is feeling in good shape ahead of the British 10k London Run on July 13.

“My training is going well, although monotony can sometimes be a problem,” said Boseley. “Anything that helps to mix things up a little is worth a try. Changing from running to suddenly using your upper body can be a bit of a shock but you feel the benefit of giving your legs a little bit of rest.

“It is also surprising the number of places where you can find a wall to use for exercise, especially when waiting for traffic or when at traffic lights. It can be the perfect way to keep warm while you are waiting for the light to change.”
