Team Standard: Your perfect warm-up

With New Balance’s help, you can make your warm-up less of a chore and more of a fun and varied part of your exercise regime

The warm-up is one of the most important aspects of any training plan, yet it is often overlooked and avoided. However, as Team Standard discovered, it does not have to be a chore: it can be fun, varied and not even involve any running.

The 10 members of the team are now training for the British 10k London Run on Sunday 13 July, under the expert guidance of New Balance Technical Representative Bradley Howarth.

This year, the run welcomes New Balance as its Official Sporting Goods provider. The brand remains committed to manufacturing in Britain, making this event the perfect partner for them.

Howarth put Senior News Reporter Kiran Randhawa on an exercise bike (above) before she went out for her first training run.

“Correct warm-up is essential for efficient training and injury avoidance,” Howarth explains. “Make sure that you use it to ensure you have an understanding of the different types of session that you are about to try.”

Over the next two months, Team Standard will be learning more about the principles behind New Balance’s Runnovation as they prepare for the British 10k London Run.

The concept is designed to make running more fun and varied and inclusive to all. “There are many different ways to warm up,” Howarth adds. “You don’t have to run. You can take a brisk walk, do some press-ups and squat thrusts or have a light skip. Anything that gets your heart rate up before you start running will help.”

Kiran has only recently started running again following a long-term injury, so using the bike to warm up worked perfectly. “Running long distances is not really my thing,” she explains. “Warming up is really important to me and incorporating as many different sessions as possible into my training plan really appeals and will keep me motivated.”
