Thousands of Londoners to compete in first ever run2work charity event

Team Standard: ES journalists preparing for run2work day

More than 5,000 runners are expected to hit the streets of the capital tomorrow as they take part in the first ever #run2workday.

They will be joined by the 10 members of Team Standard and all will be raising money for the Evening Standard’s Dispossessed Fund.

With a recent survey by the All-Party Parliamentary Commission on Physical Activity finding that the UK population is less physically active than it has ever been, run2work.com is aiming to help get one million more people active by 2020.

The movement has been backed by mayor Boris Johnson, shadow health secretary Andy Burnham, group chief executive of Barclays Antony Jenkins, Perri Shakes-Drayton and a host of other Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Johnson said it was a “great idea that will unite our dynamic and athletic workforce” and it is not too late to enter if you go to run2work.com

Everyone who registers is being asked to donate the cost of their one-way trip (£5) to the Dispossessed Fund and with #run2workdays taking place on the first Thursday of each month until October, organisers are hoping to raise in excess of £100,000.

Founder of run2work.com Gordon Lott said: “Running to work, whether part or all the way, is an easy way for people to build physical activity in to their daily routine, and to save money travel money, especially if you can get off your Tube or train before Zone 1 if you commute in London.

“This is not a race and people can run as far or as short a distance as they feel capable of doing.

“Our aim, is to get people active and encourage them to share their experiences with like-minded individuals.

“It is never too late to start exercising, it doesn’t matter how old or fit you are, the main thing is to take part and get healthy through running.”
