Rusedski breezes through

14 April 2012

Greg Rusedski set up a tough third-round meeting with second seed Joachim Johansson tomorrow after his victory today over Filippo Volandri in the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

The British No2 coasted through the first set 6-2 after twice breaking his Italian opponent's serve.

Seventh seed Volandri took the first game of the second set and kept on level terms until Rusedski broke his serve in the ninth game and won the set 6-4.

However, his form will have to improve for the clash with Johansson, of Sweden, who has looked comfortable in beating Jan Hernych and Cyril Saulnier.

Lindsay Davenport will replace Amelie Mauresmo at the top of the women's rankings after reaching the women's Kremlin Cup quarter-finals with a straight sets win over Dinara Safina of Russia.

The American brushed aside the younger sister of former US Open champion Marat Safin 6-4, 6-2. To seed and home favourite Safin was bundled out of the men's event 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 by Czech Radek Stepanek in the second round.
