Safin closes in on top spot

Marat Safin has won the Paris Masters Series final after a hard-fought victory over Australia's Mark Philippoussis.  

The 20-year-old Russian star now looks set to become the youngest-ever world number one when the rankings are published on Monday.

Second seed Safin, who lost last year's final in this competition to American Andre Agassi, overcame Philipoussis 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 in a thrilling match in the French capital.
