Saint-Andre quits as Gloucester coach

Philippe Saint-Andre completed a hat-trick of major coaching resignations yesterday, quitting Gloucester after an attempt to negotiate a new contract failed.

Unlike Graham Henry of Wales and Francois Pienaar of Saracens, the 37-year-old Frenchman bows out despite his team flying higher than at any stage since the sport went professional six years ago. Gloucester are second to Leicester in the Premiership and through to the semi-finals of the European Shield.

Having failed to secure the improved long-term deal to remain at Kingsholm, Saint-Andre will return to France where he has been offered the job of building Bourgoin into a major force. Gloucester will be run in the meantime by former France prop Laurent Seigne in tandem with former Wales fly half Paul Turner. Gloucester owner Tom Walkinshaw said: 'During our recent negotiations we came to the conclusion that it was better for both Philippe and the club to go our separate ways.'

Saint-Andre, a player before succeeding Richard Hill three seasons ago, said: 'I will take with me some very good memories. I would like to thank Tom and all the fans for the support they have given me.'
