Saints sweat on Sculthorpe

12 April 2012

St Helens are anxiously awaiting the results of scans on forward Paul Sculthorpe amid fears that the Great Britain captain could become a doubt for the end-of-season Tri-Nations Series.

Sculthorpe, who turns 29 later this month, suffered a recurrence of his old knee injury during Saints' 34-12 engage Super League win over Wakefield on Friday and was undergoing tests to determine the extent of the latest setback.

"We won't know anything until after we get the results back," said St Helens coach Daniel Anderson.

Sculthorpe has been plagued by knee problems over the past year. He missed the last two months of last season to undergo major surgery and was withdrawn during the second half on his side's latest match, with Anderson revealing the player had lost all power in his problem right knee.

Sculthorpe led Saints to victory in the Challenge Cup final nine days ago but has played only four matches in the last 10 weeks.

The two-time winner of the prestigious Man of Steel award succeeded Andy Farrell as Great Britain captain in May 2005 but missed that year's Tri-Nations due to the knee complaint.

He led the Lions for the first time against New Zealand at Knowsley Road in June but was forced to come off early in the 46-14 win with an injury to his left knee.
