Saints wait on Cunningham injury

12 April 2012

St Helens will check on the fitness of inspirational hooker Keiron Cunningham ahead of next week's Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final against Huddersfield.

The veteran former Great Britain international, who is bidding to reach a ninth final, spent a long spell off the field in Friday night's Super League derby win over Wigan with a knee injury.

Coach Mick Potter said: "He just got a bang on his knee so we will need to assess it."

Saints already have a lengthy injury list with Sean Long, Maurie Fa'asavalu, Jason Cayless, James Roby, Jonny Lomax and Gary Wheeler sidelined.

Paul Wellens also played on Friday with a broken hand, while Lee Gilmour ended the game with a bandaged head.

Wigan also have their own injury concerns ahead of their semi-final against Warrington.

Centre Darrell Goulding became their latest casualty after dislocating his shoulder in a challenge on Gilmour in Friday's dramatic 10-6 defeat.

Centre or second row Phil Bailey should at least return after a dead leg, and captain Sean O'Loughlin is an outside chance after more than a month out with a knee problem. Tim Smith and Michael McIlorum are long-term absentees.
