Scholes is one of the best - Fergie

12 April 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Paul Scholes should be an early contender for Footballer of the Year.

The Manchester United midfielder took his tally for the season to five goals with a brace against Newcastle.

And the United manager said: "I think everyone at the club and the supporters would be delighted if Paul got an honour. He's scored five goals for me and that is up with the best of them in the country in that role."

Scholes has returned to top form after suffering blurred vision and Ferguson has nothing for admiration for the former England star.

"His football brain - and the football he produces at times - is marvellous," added Ferguson.

"It would be great for him to get an award like that."

Ferguson has hinted he could make two new signings in the transfer window but is already pleased with the quality in his squad.

"I am happy with what I have, " he said. "The players are improving. They are good professionals and train well.

"You expect to see an improvement when they are at a young age.

"We have lot of cover as well, if you look at our back four positions. I am okay there and we have reasonable cover in midfield. Up front, we have brought in Henrik Larsson and that is a bonus. Then there is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He will get 15 goals for us this season if he stays fit."
