Schools march toward Final

13 April 2012

While Jonny Wilkinson, Mike Tindall, Lewis Moody and Steve Thompson are all

Wilkinson played in a semi-final back in 1996 for Lord Wandsworth against
Tindall's Queen Elizabeth Grammar School from Wakefield. He was kept out by
Yorkshire grit that day as QEGS went through to their second losing final
against Colston's.

Lord Wandsworth, who have also produced Harlequins exciting new winger Ugo
Monye, were 24-3 winners at Reading Blue Coat to earn a third round tie
with Farnborough Sixth Form College. If they make home advantage count in
that one there will be a trip to cup specialists RGS High Wycombe. They
do not have a vintage team this season but thrashed Forest from Reading
49-11 after being seeded to the third round.

QEGS have had a lean time in the cup since Tindall's days but have made
good start to the season. They were 38-9 winners at South Craven in the
third round but have real test in store at Manchester Grammar. Their young
team have already beaten Ormskirk and Cheadle Hulme comfortably. QEGS are
also in a tough part of the draw. Bradford Grammar, drawing on the talents
of a fine Under15 side who reached the semi-finals, are in round four
already with RGS Newcastle. Old rivals Durham, Lancaster RGS St Peter's
York are through and there will be abattle royal on on Merseyside when
Calday Grange entertain Birkenhead.

Moody learned his rugby at Oakham and the cup winners' bid for a third
successive Twickenham appearance began in style despite the majority of
last season's team having left the school. They had a runaway 65-18 win at
King's Grantham in the third round and now have home advantage against
Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth College whose confidence is high after
defeating Sutton Coldfield and Solihull.

In the same midland section are Northanpton School for Boys where Thompson
was once talked out of swapping basketball for rugby by coach Mark Lee.
Northampton last made a mark on the competition when Ian Vass, lately of
the Saints but playing in France this season, inspired a run to the fifth
round. That is not beyond then again after winning three home ties, the
most recent a 54-0 defeat of Hinchingbrooke. They must travel now and await
the winners of this week's game between Newcastle-under-Lyme and Welbeck
College.
