Schwarzer hero in Boro cup win

12 April 2012

Mark Schwarzer was Middlesbrough's FA Cup hero as he pulled off two penalty shoot-out saves to help the Barclays Premiership side survive a major scare against Bristol City at The Riverside.

The Australian saved from Phil Jevons and substitute Craig Woodman after Ayegbeni Yakubu, who had missed from the spot in extra-time, hit the post with his side's fifth attempt - leaving youngster Adam Johnson to win it 5-4.

The Coca-Cola League One side had taken a shock lead through David Noble in the 23rd minute.

Boro substitute Mark Viduka levelled from close range to take the tie into extra-time and it looked like Gareth Southgate's side had settled it when Yakubu made up for his spot-kick blunder with his side's second goal.

Defender Jamie McCombe kept City's dream of securing a fifth-round tie at home to West Brom alive with three minutes remaining but Schwarzer was the difference to set up Saturday's clash with Tony Mowbray's side.
