Sergio Garcia’s Ryder run set to end as he takes a break

Break: Sergio Garcia
13 April 2012

Sergio Garcia today revealed he will take a two-month break from golf following this week's US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, effectively ruling himself out of a place in Europe's Ryder Cup team.

The Spaniard has competed in every Ryder Cup since the infamous Battle of Brookline in 1999 when, aged 19, he became the youngest player to appear in the event. However, Garcia has decided the cure for a run of poor form that leaves him languishing 50th in the rankings is to go on an extended holiday.

He said: "I haven't had a nice, long break my whole career. I need the break. I need to miss the game a little bit."

Garcia had already broken the news to Colin Montgomerie, captain of the European side that will face the United States at Celtic Manor in Wales from 1-3 October.

The announcement follows Tiger Woods's admission that he would not want to play for the US if he cannot improve on the form that resulted in him finishing joint 78th out of the 80-man field in the Bridgestone Invitational World Championship.

Woods's worst professional four-round card of 298 left him 18 over par, 30 shots behind winner Hunter Mahan.
