SFA: Vogts job is safe

14 April 2012

Scottish Football Association president John McBeth insists Berti Vogts will not be sacked whatever happens in Moldova.

The Scotland manager has come under increasing pressure over the weekend after defeat in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Norway.

That leaves the Scots with just one point from their opening two games at home and they board the plane for Chisinau today knowing that anything less than a win against Moldova is not acceptable.

But SFA chief McBeth insists they have no intention of relieving Vogts of his duties.

He told the Scottish Daily Mail: "We will honour our contract with Berti.
"We would never break an agreement with a manager - we'll always honour that."

When quizzed if that meant Vogts would remain in the post whatever happens on Wednesday, McBeth replied: "That will be up to him.

"There must be some effect on him from the abuse people are handing out - you would have to be made of concrete to survive that."

Meanwhile, Barry Ferguson has vowed to fly out with the rest of the Scotland squad today even though he admits he only has a 50-50 chance of playing.

The Scotland and Blackburn skipper played through the pain barrier on Saturday with a hamstring injury and he is determined to do the same against Moldova.
He told the Scottish Sun: "It was a gamble to face Norway but I was always playing, no matter what.

"I got through it and now here we go again. I don't think I'll train before the game though.

"It will be a last minute one but I'm going because I want to help Scotland, I want to help Berti Vogts.

"I hope to shut those people up once and for all who say that I don't care about playing for Scotland.

"I want to travel because I am simply desperate to play.

"Right now, I would rate myself as only 50-50 to be honest. I'm struggling to be fit to face Moldova but I will be on that plane."
