Shamed Merritt is cleared for worlds

13 April 2012

Disgraced Olympic and world 400metres champion LaShawn Merritt has been cleared to race in August's World Championships.

The American was given a 21-month ban after testing positive for a substance he said was found in a male enhancement product he had taken.

As a result, he missed last week's trials but as his ban ends on July 27, USA Track & Field have granted him a wild card for the finals in Daegu.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport will decide in September whether Merritt can race at London 2012. IOC rules state athletes with a six-month ban must miss the next Games.
