Sharapova streaks into last eight

13 April 2012

Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova stretched her winning streak to 10 matches with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova at the Zurich Challenge.

"I'm never really 100 per cent satisfied with my game but I felt pretty much in control," Sharapova said after firing 11 aces past her opponent.

The 17-year-old Russian seems to have rediscovered her form with tournament wins in Seoul and Tokyo.

Between winning Wimbledon in July and Seoul at the start of this month, she had been unable to string together more than two wins in a row.

"I see my game as a work in progress and so I never expected that I'd be able to win every match after Wimbledon," she said.

Australia's Alicia Molik also booked a quarter-final place at the expense of Russian Vera Zvonareva, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Serbia's Ana Ivanovic fought back from 5-1 down in the final set to beat French teenager Tatiana Golovin and will now meet Venus Williams

Elena Dementieva will also be in second round action today against fellow Russian Elena Bovina.
