Sicily fuming with Mourinho

14 April 2012

One of Sicily's leading politicians has joined a chorus of criticism aimed at Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho over his off-the-cuff remark about needing bodyguards in Palermo.

Mourinho, who travels with his club to Porto for Wednesday's Champions League clash against his former team, was asked last week if he would need bodyguards in Portugal due to death threats he received while still a coach of the Champions League winners.

"Yes. If you visit Palermo you probably also need (them)," Mourinho replied.

Banners at Palermo's home Serie A match against Atalanta read: "Mourinho - champion of ignorance."

"If his comments were intended in good faith then I invite him to visit our land, that has not only shown in football but also in other aspects that we are very welcoming people," said Salvatore Cuffaro, the president of the Sicilian region of Palermo.

"If, instead, this coach is looking to gain publicity in Sicily's name, we will not hesitate to consider all the legal paths necessary to defend the image of our land."
