Sidebottom sidelined for England

12 April 2012

England have been forced into making a change for Wednesday's rain-hit second match of the NatWest Series after left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom suffered a slight back strain.

Having claimed a convincing 114-run victory in the opening match of the five-match one-day series at Chester-le-Street, England were expected to name an unchanged line-up.

But once the rain at Edgbaston finally ceased to allow a 29-over match starting at 3pm, England revealed that leading seamer Sidebottom had been ruled out with a back strain and replaced with Hampshire all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas.

New Zealand, heavily beaten on Sunday and during Friday's Twenty20 international at Old Trafford, had already named their line-up with all-rounder Grant Elliott replacing James Marshall for his one-day international debut.

South Africa-born Elliott had been called into the squad as cover from playing club cricket in Surrey after Jacob Oram suffered a hamstring strain which is expected to rule him out until next week.

The change has prompted the tourists to promote Ross Taylor to number three in the batting order, while all-rounder Scott Styris has moved up to number four in the order.

For the second successive match the tourists won the toss and put England in to bat, hoping it does not result in the same result as on Sunday when they piled up an impressive 307 for five.
