Simon Dyson still flies high despite feeling shattered

England's Simon Dyson shook off jet lag and boosted his Ryder Cup hopes with four closing birdies in the Czech Open at the Prosper Resort in Celadna today.

The late run gave Dyson, 16th in the race with only one more week to go, a two-under-par 70 but that was four behind Indian Shiv Kapur.

On Sunday the York golfer shared 12th place in the US PGA Championship with Paul Casey, whose decision to opt out of the last two counting events has opened the door to a number of players.

"It can't do me any harm," said Dyson. "If I can get a couple of top threes or a win you never know and it was great to finish that way. I played the pro-am yesterday and was shattered but I got a good night's sleep."

Dyson flew back from Chicago on Monday night, then caught another flight to Prague and after that had to take a train to Ostrava. He played with compatriot Ross McGowan, who at 11th in the standings needs "only" a top-four finish this week or in the Johnnie Walker Championship to overtake Casey.

But McGowan started with a seven on the long 10th and after climbing back to one under finished with another double bogey and had to settle for a one over 73. Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, eighth on the points table but not playing next week, posted a 71 on the course he co-designed and 2008 team-mate Oliver Wilson, still in with an outside chance of retaining his place, had a 72.

Kapur, who missed his last three halfway cuts, had six successive birdies from the second to turn in 30 and opened a gap at the top again with further birdies on the 16th and 18th. He was one ahead of England's Richard Bland, who still had one to play.

The afternoon starters included Swede Peter Hanson, another player with Ryder Cup aspirations.
