Sir Roger Bannister receives Companion of Honour for services to sport

Sir Roger Bannister has been awarded the Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for services to sport.

The 87-year-old became the first man to break the four-minute mile mark in 1954 before going on to have a successful career as a neurologist.

Bannister was also the first Chairman of the Sports Council and was knighted for this service in 1975.

He received his latest honour at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday and said: "I feel very honoured. I didn't expect it to cause as much excitement as it did.

"It had been nine years that the world record had been fixed at that point and I was delighted.
