Graeme Smith faces a race against time to be fit for the second Test against India starting on Sunday after an MRI scan revealed he had suffered ligament damage to the little finger of his left hand.

The South Africa captain sustained the injury while attempting a catch during a fielding training session at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where the final game will be played.

A statement from Cricket South Africa read: "The medical team is confident that the swelling will subside in the next 24 hours and Graeme will put his finger to the test at Saturday's practice at Eden Gardens, after which a decision will be taken on his fitness to play in the second Test."

The Proteas lead the series 1-0 following their innings and six-run victory in the first Test at Nagpur.
