Spain wait to learn fate over racist chanting

14 April 2012

World football's governing body were today due to announce Spain's punishment for their fans' racist abuse of England players during last month's friendly in Madrid.

Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips were both subjected to monkey chants during the match at the Bernabeu Stadium and there was also racist abuse during the England Under-21 friendly the night before.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said: "In such a situation we should stop the game and identify those involved. They should be taken out onto the field and be booed by the rest of the spectators."

The Spanish Football Federation could be hit by a heavy fine or ordered to play matches behind closed doors.
