A blockbuster thank you from Barack Obama to David Cameron

Barack Obama called David Cameron this evening to congratulate Britain on the blockbuster Olympics staged in London.

The US president also praised the extraordinary performance of Team GB to win 65 medals including 29 gold, putting them in third place in the medals’ table.

He also thanked the Prime Minister for the hospitality laid on for his wife Michelle.

The First Lady led the US Olympic delegation to the London Games.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “President Obama called the Prime Minister this evening to congratulate the UK on a brilliant Olympics.

“The President praised the organisation of the Games and the amazing performance of Team GB athletes. And he thanked the Prime Minister for the hospitality the UK had shown to the First Lady at the start of the Games and the US team ever since.”

Mr Cameron agreed with Mr Obama that the Games had gone “extremely well”.

The No10 spokesman added: “He congratulated the President on the astounding performance of the American competitors, topping the medal table and said we thoroughly had enjoyed hosting them.”
