Adam Gemili was left crestfallen after seeing his hopes of medalling in the men’s 200m at the Tokyo Olympics ruined by injury.

The Team GB sprinter pulled up after just a couple of strides in heat four of seven at the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday morning.

There was heavy strapping visible around the back of Gemili’s right leg, with the 2014 European champion subsequently confirming that he had suffered a hamstring issue during his last block start in preparation for the race.

In a heartbreaking interview, a tearful Gemili told the BBC: “My last block start before I went into the cool room, I just felt my hamstring go. I’m in so much pain.

“I said just strap it up, let me go out there and at least try. You have to try.”

He added: “I can’t believe it. I can’t believe this has happened. I felt like I had such a good chance as well, I’ve been training so well.

“Honestly, this season has been really up and down and I finally put together about four to five weeks of solid work.

“I was ready to go out there and win, try and get a medal and at least a PB. I don’t get that chance… I can’t really say anything else.

“It’s just s**t. It’s s**t. Excuse my language, I apologise, I really am sorry. It’s just the worst feeling in the world.”
