Amir Khan critical of London 2012 McDonald's plan

Weighty issue: Amir Khan says the decision to open the world's largest McDonald's in Stratford is sending out the wrong message
5 April 2012

Boxer Amir Khan has hit out over plans by McDonald's to open its biggest ever restaurant in Stratford for London 2012.

The 3,000 sq m Central Restaurant will be one of four around the site, one of which will be in the athletes' village.

Khan, who won Olympic silver in Athens 2004, told the Daily Telegraph: "It's clearly sending out the wrong signal to kids and young people.

"The Olympics are a great opportunity to show young people what types of food they need in different aspects of their life. I think this is a mistake."

The restaurant expects to serve 50,000 Big Macs and 180,000 portions of fries over the 29 days of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
