David Florence and Richard Hounslow were tipped to win gold at London 2012, but the canoe pairing were not even top finishers in the British set-up after being upstaged by Etienne Stott and Tim Baillie.

Having finished dead last in the individual competition following a disastrous run in the final here, Florence, 34, is adamant he won’t let the last four years be a waste.

“London and Rio have been very disappointing,” he said. “Hopefully the C2 won’t be — but who knows?”

Florence once applied to be an astronaut — his application was turned down — and learned Portuguese for the Games.

But it is on the water that he wants to impress, and he pledged to Hounslow to be back to his peak.

“I hope he knows I will be ready to give it my all. Hopefully we’ll put in a good run, then who knows?”
