First gold medal won by USA's Virginia Thrasher in the women’s 10m air rifle event at Rio 2016 Olympics

USA's Virginia Thrasher has claimed the first gold medal at this summer’s Rio Games.

The 19-year-old American took the top prize in the 10m rifle event this afternoon by beating Du Li and Yi Siling, who claimed silver and bronze medals respectively at the Olympic Shooting Centre.

Attention will now turn the Men’s cycling road race where Chris Froome will be among the competitors competing to win gold at Fort Copacabana.

As revealed by Standard Sport, the reigning Tour de France champion could yet be asked to play a support role for Team GB today, with Froome are stronger candidate for gold in Wednesday’s time trial event.

The 237km course boasts 11 climbs, with four laps of one circuit in Grumari before a flat run along the coast to another hilly two laps of the Vista Chinesa circuit and then a flat finish.
