Joe Fraser had a disappointing day in the final of the parallel bars after finishing in last place.

Fraser, who was crowned world champion in 2019, put in a spirited performance but struggled against a very strong field.

Zou Jingyuan of China, who missed the 2019 World Championships with a shoulder injury, was a class above and claimed the gold medal with a huge score of 16.233.

That is the biggest score we have seen at this Olympic Games so far and there was clear daylight between him and the rest of the field.

Germany’s Lukas Dauser claimed silver with a score of 15.700, while Ferhat Arican took bronze to claim Turkey’s first ever Olympic medal on the parallel bars.

Fraser was punished for two small errors in his routine and finished in eighth place with a score of 14.500.

The 22-year-old, who was the youngest competitor in the final, will no doubt learn from the experience and will be one of Team GB’s great hopes at the Paris Games in three years.
