London 2012 Olympics: GB showjumping team ends 60-year medal drought

Gold win: Showjumper Scott Brash leaps over a jump resembling Big Ben's tower
6 August 2012

The British showjumping team claimed a gold medal today, placing Great Britain firmly in third place on the medals league table, with six more golds than fourth-placed South Korea.

The four-man team, Nick Skelton, Ben Maher, Scott Brash, and Peter Charles beat the Netherlands into the silver medal spot and the team from Saudi Arabia into bronze medal position.

Our overall medals haul now stands at 17 gold, 11 silver, and 11 bronze.

Team GB were victorious in a tense jump-off against the Dutch after the two teams racked up the same number of faults.

The last time a British team won an Olympic gold in showjumping was in 1952 in Helsinki.

Spectators roared and stamped their feet as Britain took the Olympic title in the equine equivalent of a penalty shoot-out.

The final competitor for Team GB Peter Charles raised his riding helmet in the air with delight as he secured victory with a clear round.

Team mates Nick Skelton and Ben Maher also jumped flawlessly, meaning the four penalty points clocked up by Scott Brash knocking one bar down did not count.
