Lawrence Okoye announced himself on the world stage by throwing himself into the final of the discus with a huge distance of 67 metres. Here are his vital statistics.

2. Lawrence is 6’6 and over 20st 5lbs

3. He used to play rugby for the London Irish and Wasps academy sides.

4. Holds the record for the longest ever throw by a teenager.

5. Says he eats six meals a day to feed his huge frame.

6. Nebraska University offered him a scholarship but he turned it down.

7. He broke the British record by throwing 67.63m in July 2011.

8. Scored the winning try in the Daily Mail National Under-18 Rugby Cup Final for his school in 2010.

9. His size and speed led him to being tipped as a future Jonah Lomu of English rugby until he gave up the sport in favour of the discus.

20. His opening throw of the competition went badly wrong and almost hit a photographer.
