Nicola Adams looking to make most of gold medal chance

Nicola Adams is relishing her semi-final battle with India's five-time world champion Mary Kom tomorrow after making history as the first British woman to guarantee an Olympic boxing medal.

Adams beat Bulgaria's Stoyka Petrova 16-7 and hopes her size advantage will pay against Kom, who moved up two weight divisions in order to make the flyweight limit and relies on sheer tenacity to see her through.

"Mary Kom is a five-time world champion and you've got to be special to do that," Adams said. "It's going to be a tough match but I'm going to have the height and reach advantage and will try to use all my attributes.

"Everyone was a bit down at the start of the Games with China taking all of the early medals, but the medal count is going up now and everyone is buzzing in the Village, and that is giving everyone inspiration."

Adams is the last British woman standing after Natasha Jonas lost a storming quarter-final battle 26-15 to Ireland's seemingly invincible Katie Taylor, while Savannah Marshall was stunned 16-12 by Marina Volnova.

Jonas said: "I came here the fittest, leanest, smartest, healthiest boxer I could be but she's the best. There's nothing more I could have done. I could have thrown the kitchen sink and drove a bus into her, but it didn't work."

After wins for Anthony Ogogo and Anthony Joshua, as well as Luke Campbell on Sunday, Welsh pair Fred Evans and Andrew Selby will bid to guarantee Great Britain's fifth and sixth boxing medals respectively when they are in action today.
