Olympics ban on Hyde Park Corner traffic

Closures: traffic at Hyde Park Corner
25 April 2012

Hyde Park Corner will be shut for at least 13 hours on each of five days during the Olympics.

It will close from 3am until 4 or 5pm to make way for the road cycling and triathlon events in Westminster.

Restrictions were revealed in a Met Police briefing to councillors. It also revealed that 300 extra officers will be drafted into central London during the Games and predicts a rise in crimes, such as theft and assault, as five million extra people flood the capital.

There will be a “rolling road block” in central London for the torch relay on July 26, the day before the opening ceremony. The Met expects the relay to attract “spontaneous demonstrations”.

A laser show will illuminate six central London bridges for two months during the Games.
