On this day at the London 2012 Olympic Games

1 August 2013

Medal events: 20

British medals: two gold, one silver, two bronze

Best of British: Women’s rowing pair Heather Stanning and Helen Glover won the home nation’s first gold medal at the Games and Bradley Wiggins (above) followed up on his bike, claiming gold in the men’s time trial just weeks after winning the Tour de France. Wiggins won by 42 seconds, with Chris Froome finishing third.

Magic moment: Hungarian Daniel Gyurta set a new world record of 2min 07.28sec to win the men’s 200metres breaststroke ahead of Team GB’s Michael Jamieson, who set a new British record himself in coming so close. It was Gyurta’s second Olympic medal, having won silver in Athens eight years earlier.

Off the wall: Never far from the headlines throughout the Games, Boris Johnson made the news when he was left dangling 20ft off the ground for several minutes after taking part in a zip-wire act in Victoria Park. The London Mayor gamely waved British flags as he waited to be rescued.
