Great Britain are through to the quarter-finals of the Rio Olympics men’s rugby sevens tournament after an impressive 21-19 win over New Zealand at Deodoro Stadium.

A third straight win secured the British their place at the top of Pool C, whilst New Zealand’s fate in the tournament will not be determined until Fiji’s game with the United States in Pool A.

Mark Bennett, James Davies and Mark Bennett all ran in tries in an impressive first half, leaving the British with a 21-point advantage at the interval.

New Zealand responded to the threat of elimination in style as Rieko Ioane, Regan Ware and Lewis Ormond touched down to cut the deficit to just two with thirty seconds left on the clock.

A well-claimed restart by Sam Cross allowed Britain to run out the clock before Dan Bibby thumped the ball into touch.

Great Britain will play the runners-up from Pool A, likely to be Argentina.
