Where to see the Paralympic torch

15 August 2012

The Beatles' Abbey Road crossing, Lord's Cricket Ground, London Zoo and Tower Bridge are some of the landmarks to be visited during the Paralympic torch relay.

The overnight relay starts on August 28 at 8pm and works its way through Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire before hitting London.

Torchbearers will take it to a series of landmarks and it will also pass through the six host boroughs. It will be carried 92 miles by 580 torchbearers working in teams of five, from Stoke Mandeville to the Olympic Stadium.

The relay sites include:

:: 8.18pm - The flame is taken to the National Spinal Injuries Centre, Stoke Mandeville. Philip Tew, 37, of Aylesbury, will be among the torchbearers. The British international sportsman, who coaches aspiring athletes, is a keen wheelchair basketball and badminton player. The torchbearing team here were nominated through a Lloyds TSB campaign.

:: 8.47am - The Paralympic Flame brings its own magic to The Beatles' Abbey Road crossing. Chris Tattersall, 59, of Clitheroe, who now voluntarily teaches Braille at five East Lancashire centres after being registered blind in 1993, is among the team taking it across the grade II listed site.

:: 9.02am - Lord's Cricket Ground, complete with a team of torchbearers including five members of the UK's first blind women's cricket team, is the next stop.

:: 9.37am - The torch goes to London Zoo. A team of qualified fitness gym instructors, who each have disabilities including spinal cord injury, blindness and impaired mental health, are torchbearers. They were each unemployed before training to become instructors.

:: 10.49am - Piccadilly Circus will be passed by the relay. Pamela Galloway, 62, of Somerset, nominated for the time and dedication she gives to teaching young disabled children how to swim, is among the torchbearers.

:: 1.12pm - The Paralympic Flame heads to Tower Bridge. Richard Whitehead, a double amputee and the 200m world champion, nominated David Walkerdine, 74, of Nottingham, who will carry the torch across Tower Bridge. Whitehead said Mr Walkerdine deserved the nomination for his inspirational coaching sessions that had such a positive influence in helping him become the athlete that he is today.

:: 6.20pm - A team of torchbearers nominated through the Sainsbury's campaign carry the Paralympic Flame to Hackney Town Hall in east London. Torchbearer Michael Mcgrath, 47, of Buntingford, was nominated for the way that he coped with being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of 18. He did not let it stop him from leading a normal life.

:: 7.30pm - A team of PE teachers, nominated through the BT campaign, carry the Paralympic Flame into the community celebration in Marsh Lane playing fields, Waltham Forest. The torchbearers, who work at Davenant Foundation School and who were nominated for their dedication to teaching Paralympic sports, helped teach a boccia team which came 3rd at last year's National Boccia Championships.

:: 9.57pm - Flame is brought to the community live big screen at Stratford Park in Newham, east London. Argyle Bird, 13, of Hull, is among those doing the torchbearer honours. He is an example for others in the way he has not let his disability get in the way of him taking part in sport, his nomination states.
