Sri Lanka suffer setback

13 April 2012

Sri Lanka suffered an early wobble as they chased 192 to beat unfancied Zimbabwe in the ICC Champions Trophy at The Oval today.

Eighteen-year-old paceman Tinashe Panyangara struck the first blow with the fourth ball of the innings when he had Avishka Gunawardene well caught in the slips by Mark Vermeulen high to his left.

And three overs later, Sri Lanka were 10 for two. Doug Hondo began the over with a wide but then Sanath Jayasuriya edged the next delivery outside off-stump to captain Tatenda Taibu behind the stumps.

Sri Lanka, who needed to reach their target inside 27.5 overs to give them a better run rate than England ahead of Friday's match at the Rose Bowl, were suddenly forced to reassess their priorities.

Skipper Marvan Atapattu and new batsman Saman Jayantha avoided any further mishaps until Jayantha, whose 36 included six fours, was caught by Dion Ebrahim off Elton Chigumbura with the score on 54 in the 12th over. Chigumbura had earlier top-scored with 57 for Zimbabwe.

Opener Atapattu continued to play the anchor role, reaching double figures off his 20th ball in the 15th over, at which stage he was 11 not out with wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara unbeaten on seven. Sri Lanka were 66 for three.
