Steve keeps faith with his winners

13 April 2012

Steve McClaren is set to name an unchanged side for England's European Championship clash against Russia on Wednesday after the injured pair of Owen Hargreaves and Frank Lampard were sent back to their clubs on Monday night.

The England coach once again kept his players guessing in training on Monday afternoon but the feeling among the squad is that he will not recall Peter Crouch, instead giving Emile Heskey the chance to continue as strike partner to Michael Owen.

McClaren is set to go with an unchanged side

The picture will not become totally clear until Tuesday's training session, but the failure of Hargreaves and Lampard to recover from injury appears to have persuaded McClaren to remain faithful to the side who beat Israel so impressively on Saturday. Hargreaves had a scan on his injured thigh on Monday morning but was then unable to pass the fitness test that followed.

Although it amounts to another setback for McClaren, when he was keen to deploy a holding midfielder against the Russians, it does mean Gareth Barry deservedly keeps his place.

Barry will, however, be asked to play more defensively against Guus Hiddink's side in a game England once again have to win.
