Still a family affair at SW19

13 April 2012

You may recognise the family resemblance and the concentrated expression, but this tennis player is usually seen watching her son in action on Wimbledon's Centre Court, not playing in SW19 herself.

Unfortunately, she too failed to lift the winners' trophy when taking part in the Evening Standard London Parks and Clubs LTA Tournament, in association with Hildon Water, but she did at least reach the final.

Tim Henman's mother, Jane, and her doubles partner, Carol Wright, were beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Great Britain amateur veteran players Jo Pedrette and Steffi Rodrigues in the Ladies' over 40 doubles event.

The indoor tournament, established in 1925, began in May and involved 600 competitors.

Tim comes from a long line of successful tennis players. His great grandmother, Ellen Brown, was the first woman to serve overarm at Wimbledon, his grandmother, Susan Billington, was the last to serve underarm and his mother, who is a costume designer, played in Junior Wimbledon.

Tournament winners - Ladies' singles: Yvonne Burrage; Men's singles: Emmanuel Chinedu; Ladies' doubles: Julia Gunn & Claire Sewell; Men's doubles: Daniel Oppe & Mark Shearing; Ladies' 40 doubles: Jo Pedrette & Steffi Rodrigues; Men's 45 singles: Phil Smith; Mixed doubles: Matt Henley & Sally Godman; Girls' 16 singles: Rochelle van der Walt; Ladies' 40 Singles: Jenny Cox; Boys' 16 singles: James Silvester; Men's 45 doubles: Chris Gotla & Russell Howat; Mixed 40 doubles: Clive Rippon & Jan Towers.
