Surprise gold for the USA

The United States won their first ever gold medal in the women's team event at the world gymnastics championships in Anaheim, California, with seven-time champions Romania collecting silver and Australia a bronze.

The Americans benefited from a series of errors from their main rivals, notably from the Svetlana Khorkina-led Russian team.

But shorn of trio Courtney Kupets, Annia Hatch and Ashley Postell, absent through injury and illness, the US team score of 112.573 represented a fine effort.
