Sven: I will not change

Studious: Sven-Goran Eriksson

Sven-Goran Eriksson said today he would not be changing his coaching style despite claims he struggles to motivate his players.

The England coach's lowkey approach came in for criticism after the World Cup and, although the Swede has recently taken a more hands-on approach at training, the problem was raised again following his team's lacklustre victory over Liechtenstein.

Eriksson said it was too late for him to alter his studious approach despite Gareth Southgate's belief that the England dressing room can be too quiet.

"If you want someone shouting you have to (make a) change because that's never been my style," he said ahead of tomorrow's Euro 2004 qualifier against Turkey.

"At my age it's not easy and I have no intention to change my character; I couldn't do it.

"I'm extremely happy with the squad I have and have always been. The squad is fantastic. They are good players, good human beings, getting together very well." Eriksson was unconcerned about reports that a Turkish official had filmed England's training yesterday, pointing out that David Beckham (blisters) and Kieron Dyer (shins) sat out the session.

The duo are the only slight worries but should be fit for the game at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

"All of our players know this is a really big game. We can't fail if we want to win the group," he added, aware of the criticism after the 2-0 win over Liechtenstein.

"I read some papers and it would have been better not to. We took three points, a professional job done. I know we can play better of course but let's try to do that tomorrow.

"Turkey, as a football country is very big today, the World Cup showed it and the squad they have has many good players playing in big clubs in Europe. Turkey are one of the countries making the most progress in the world."
