Olympic heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft insisted yesterday that Britain's Dwain Chambers and other drug cheats should be banned for life from the Games.

Chambers, who served a two-year ban after testing positive for tetrahydrogestrinone in 2003, will later this week launch his appeal against a bylaw which prevents him from representing his country at Olympic level. His case against the British Olympic Association should be heard in the High Court before the UK trials begin on July 11.

But Sweden's Kluft said: 'Maybe there should be a punishment that you cannot be part of the Olympic Games again, because sometimes it feels like two years is not enough. 'People cheat, they come back and they win again, so it's not fair for the ones who are clean and train hard and believe in a clean sport.'

Meanwhile, America's Tyson Gay has run the fastest 100metres of all time to win his right to challenge for the Olympic crown.

Gay's time of 9.68sec in the U.S. trials in Oregon will not be recognised as a world record because of a wind at his back that exceeded the legal limit. Usain Bolt's 9.72 therefore remains the top mark.

Gay is next scheduled to run 100m at Crystal Palace on July 25, against former world record holder Asafa Powell. He then faces Powell and Jamaica's Bolt in Beijing.
