Taylor backing call over wages

Matt Hughes13 April 2012

Players' Union chief executive Gordon Taylor today backed calls for football's top stars to reveal the wages they earn.

With the English game facing an uncertain financial future, Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore believes opening up players' salaries to public scrutiny could halt the spiralling wage inflation which has hit clubs.

The system is already in place in America, where sports fans know exactly how much their baseball, basketball and American football heroes make.

Today Taylor, whose £600,000 plus salary and benefits package from the Professional Footballers' Association is published annually by union watchdog, the certification office, welcomed Scudamore's proposals.

He said: "That would not be a problem. I am in favour of anything which leads to greater transparency in the game. But it should also include agents' fees, managers' wages and details of what managing directors and chief executives earn."
