Taylor shows no mercy

14 April 2012

Defending champion Phil Taylor produced another ruthless display as he overcame Roland Scholten in the quarter-finals of the Skybet World Grand Prix.

'The Power' completely outplayed Dutchman Scholten - who was clearly struggling with a neck problem - to wrap up a 4-0 success at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin.

• Taylor powers into quarters

He will face old friend Dennis Priestley in the last four after the 'Mexborough Menace' inflicted a 4-2 defeat on rising star James Wade earlier in the evening.

"Roland was not very well out there but sometimes it's difficult for you as well in that situation," said Taylor.

"Roland went out there to win and I knew I had to keep the pressure on him."

"I knew he wasn't right and it's your instinct to pounce on him as quickly as you can," added Taylor. "Fair play to him, though, he didn't roll over.

"If Roland had been his normal self I think you would have seen a cracking game tonight.

"But I did what I had to do and I'm looking forward to playing Dennis tomorrow night.

"People keep talking about the young players coming through but I tell you what, Dennis is one tough cookie. Not many people can beat him on that stage."

Priestley, 56, never really got out of third gear against Wade, runner-up to Taylor at the Stan James World Matchplay back in July, but it was enough to see him through.

"It's nice to be through to the semis again," said Priestley, who lost to world number one Colin Lloyd 12 months ago.

"I must admit it was struggle tonight, a real struggle. I battled hard and I think I deserved to win because of my fighting spirit."
