Andy Murray was forced to dig deep to beat Kyle Edmund in two absorbing sets in their all-British quarter-final at the China Open today.

Murray came through 7‑6, 6-2 in an hour and 50 minutes but was pushed all the way by British No2 Edmund in Beijing.

Edmund matched Murray in an enthralling first set that lasted an hour and six minutes but the Scot ultimately had the extra nous to take a tie-break 11-9.

Murray found an extra gear to take the second set in 44 minutes and make it through but Edmund will come away satisfied with his performance.

The 21-year-old gave Murray a stern test and will move into the world’s top 50 for the first time in his career following his run to the last eight.

Murray admitted the build-up to his match with Edmund had been “uncomfortable” for him because the pair are Davis Cup team-mates and regularly train together.

But he came through and will play David Ferrer of Spain in the semi-final tomorrow after he beat German Alexander Zverev 6-7, 6‑1, 7-5.

World No2 Murray is continuing his return to action from the thigh injury he suffered when playing alongside Edmund in Great Britain’s Davis Cup semi‑final defeat by Argentina last month in Glasgow.
