Andy Murray has ruled out the possibility of returning to singles action at the US Open.

Murray, who has been competing in doubles action since returning from hip surgery, has previously hinted he could be back in time for the final Grand Slam of the year.

The former world no.1 celebrated a doubles title at Queens with Feliciano Lopez and has made a bright start to mixed doubles action with Serena Williams at Wimbledon.

But the Scot has suggested he is no longer considering a return to solo action at Flushing Meadows.

"I think it's pretty unlikely just in terms of timing," he said. "I spoke to my team a bit about that on Monday. Just a lot of stuff I need to get done physically, get myself stronger.

"The amount of work I need to do on the court to get ready for singles, the amount of work I need to put in off the court to get myself strong enough to play best-of-five sets, it's still quite a way away unfortunately."

Murray's coach Jamie Delgado had earlier said he is "optimistic" about Murray’s hopes of returning to singles action, but insisted there is no timeframe in place yet.

"We are taking every day as it comes because we don't know how the rehab will continue going," Delgado said.

"All I can say is that he is doing really well and there have been good signs the last few weeks and reasons to be optimistic in what he can do.

"The pressure is off him, I don't feel like there is any pressure on him at all, it has just been good fun to see him playing with no pain.

"There has been very limited pain in recent weeks, so he hasn't been moaning about his hip so we will just see how the next few weeks go.

"There is no date on it, it is a very much, 'see how we go', and there are certain physical targets he will have to get to before he can play singles and that is out of my hands, there are no dates on it.

"We just hope he is going to play singles at some point, but we just don't know when."
