Daniil Medvedev survived a wobble to beat Filip Krajinovic and reach the fourth round of the Australian Open, despite his coach walking out mid-match.

The fourth seed blew a two-set advantage and vented his frustration with several verbal volleys that saw coach Gilles Cervara leave the Rod Laver Arena, before he eventually prevailed 6-3 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-0, his first ever five-set victory.

“He said just before leaving that he’s sure I’m going to win the match, but he’s going to leave to let me be more calm,” Medvedev said of Cervara’s exit.

“He knew I was going to win the match, so he left. That’s all I’m going to say.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Murray and Bethanie Mattek-Sands’ reunion got off to a winning start in the mixed doubles.

Murray and Mattek-Sands, who won the 2019 US Open title, had not played together since last year’s Australian Open as mixed doubles was not played at the US Open and French Open last year due to coronavirus restrictions.

However, it has made a timely return here and the Scottish-American pairing beat Rohan Bopanna and Yingying Duan 6-4 6-4.
